As you’ve probably heard, yesterday the House of Representatives took the final vote on the fiscal year 2006 budget bill, which cuts $40 billion in mandatory (“entitlement”) spending and removes support for a range of low-income programs. The House passed the legislation (S. 1932) by a razor-thin margin of 216 – 214. The Senate had approved the bill in December. All House Democrats (except Rep. Blumenauer who was absent), Independent Bernie Sanders (VT), and 13 Republicans voted against the bill. The legislation will now be sent to President Bush to sign into law. Many thanks to those of you who encouraged attendees at your event to call Congress yesterday. While we are disappointed by the passing of the bill, we are encouraged by the knowledge that the progressive faith community played a significant role over the past year of reminding members of Congress and the general that budgets are moral documents, with real consequences that affect our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. We remain hopeful that this message will continue to gain momentum in the coming days and weeks as Congress takes up debate on a package of billions in new tax cuts for the wealthiest among us and President Bush prepares to send his FY07 budget to Congress (yes, believe it or not, it’s that time again…).
