We'll be hosting a Peninsula State of our Values Watch - join us if you are close by.
From Seattle to Fort Lauderdale, Florida... from Orange County to Bar Harbor, Maine...
People of faith will host more than 160 State of Our Values watches in 40 states tomorrow evening to help reframe the debate about the values that should guide our nation's policies. We'll watch President Bush's State of the Union speech in communities across the country, discuss it, and then put forth an alternative vision that embraces the biblical principles of economic and racial justice, healthy families, strong communities, a consistent ethic of life, peacemaking, and caring for God's creation. We invite you to be a part of this evening.

At a press conference last Thursday, President Bush revealed the three main topics he'll address in his speech: values, security, and fiscal responsibility. We agree these topics are important, and tomorrow night we invite you to ask three equally important questions: Whose values? Security for whom and at what cost? Does fiscal responsibility mean sacrificing the needs of low-income working families to make room for tax breaks for millionaires and big corporations?
Tomorrow night, you and other people of faith can offer a prophetic critique and a hopeful vision of a new America, where "they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid" (Micah 4:4). In many cases, members of the media will be there to report on your reactions.

This speech will also likely occur one day before the House of Representatives votes on a budget that harms low-income families and children by cutting vital services, such as child support, Medicaid, and assistance for disabled persons. This vote also will come shortly before Congress considers legislation to slash taxes for the wealthiest Americans. We believe this is the real moral scandal in Washington, yet it is receiving little attention.
