תיקון עולם

In a speech this morning to "America's Pro-Israel Lobby," AIPAC ,  Barack Obama spoke of the

commitment embedded in the Jewish faith and tradition: to freedom and fairness; to social justice and equal opportunity. To tikkun olam – the obligation to repair this world.

This concept - תיקון עולם - originated in the early rabbinic period of Judaism and is part of עָלֵינוּ, the  prayer that is traditionally recited three times daily by many Jews.    The phrase tikkun olam is used in the longer expression l'takken olam b'malkhut Shaddai, "to perfect the world under God's sovereignty." In other words, when all people of the world abandon false gods and recognize God, the world will have been perfected.

The Obama campaign has connected with a lot of the latent hope that so many people of faith have, a yearning to heal this world.  This connection is powerful - it unleashes dedication that can be much deeper than a traditional political campaign.  You can see this in the enormous turnout, with millions of people who have never engaged in the political scene.  You can see this in the surge of young people, committing time & service to this campaign.
