Wed @ The Museum with the Walker Cleavelands

After a jam-packed day of mtgs in NYC, I connected with Sarah & Adam for a walk-thru of MoMA, then some great pizza  and good conversation in my fav building in the world.

As I reflected on the art & the discussion, I saw two odd connections:

  • I was really fascinated by how Sarah described her hope for her PhD studies.  It reminded me how much of spiritual formation in Western churchianity is in the head, climbing a ladder to know more about Jesus.  This glorious piece captures the bizarre futility of that construct:

  • The main exhibit was Georges Seurat: The Drawings.  The core of the works were Seurat doing studies for his seminal work A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. It was so hopeful to hear two grounded people talk about seminary in a way that tracked for me with how Seurat using time, space & tools to live into a new understanding, a new way of seeing.  My seminary experience was such a train wreck - I need so much to hear the hope that others have had from their own.
Speaking of grounded, the Walker Cleavelands proceeded from our pizza & talk to approach the mob scene/ritual conjuring that is the annual tree lighting at Rockefeller Center.  I am astounded they survived with holiday cheer intact - here is Adam's video reflection:
