Mike Todd keeps a blog at waving or drowning that I adore tracking - today he passes along a quote his sister Lynne emailed this morning:
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please, not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk or a snooze in the sunshine. I don't want enough of him to make me love a black man or pick beets with a migrant. I want ecstasy, not transformation; I want warmth of the womb, not a new birth. I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack. I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
i first came across this quote in a wittenberg door--while i was in high school. it was back when the yaconelli's owned the magazine and it was written as a poem, on a page that looked like a black and white photo of a crinkled paper bag. i still have it, somewhere.
absolutely love it. loved yac and ys for it, too. it helped me see truth in the middle of church bullshit and family insanity.

What a great reminder of how limited our desire for God can be. We want to know God but not too much to mess our lives up and we forget about the possilbity of the real wonderful transformation that is possible.
