That's the number of people I have fired in the 23 years of my adult working life.
It is a sad fact that I have sat in countless rooms - even airport coffee shops - and in a calm voice, told 979 people that they no longer have a job.
This remains my central experience of dominion - of rule, control, domination. It's an aspect of empire, of power, of dominion that I have my hands bloody with. I know that there are other aspects - my gender, my class, my nationality, even my height.
But when I reflect on Jesus betrayed with a kiss, hauled off to court & convicted, all I can think of is 979 fellow creatures of God that I regned over, if only for a moment.
The people who arrested Jesus - I am part of them. The mob that yelled for his death - I am part of them. The bosses who decided to convict him - I am part of them.
